Puerto Rico Loves Its Horses – Until They Lose… Then They Kill Them

Short and to the point. 400 healthy horses are *killed* every year in Puerto Rico by execution.

Why? They are not winning the races, so they have no value. That makes them too expensive to keep. So they kill them instead.

If it doesn’t produce, after a while I give it away or I kill it

It bothers me, but it has to be done because there is no money to pay for them. … I’m not going to keep losing.

- Arnoldo Maldonado

I’m sure Mr. Maldonado is not the only one with this morally objectionable practice. But he is the one getting all the global attention after agreeing to make a honest comment.

So who plays God to the horses?

Chief veterinarian Jose Garcia makes the decision. He’ll speak brief in the video. Let’s email him and ask him how much $$$ he makes for killing each healthy young animal.

Where are they executed?

Hipodromo Camarero Racetrack

Camarero Racetrack Corporation – Hipódromo Camarero
PO Box 1643, Canóvanas, Puerto Rico 00729
Telephone: (787) 641-6060

Also thanks to police offer Maria Romero who decided it was not OK to force 20 horses into a trailer without enough room to stand up for a 4 day sea voyage! Seems logical that they should at least have a comfortable journey to the island of Puerto Rico where they will eventually be *killed* should they lose too many races!

Note: This petition includes links to resources on how these horses can be “re-homed” rather than killed.
