Puerto Rico is a small island in the Caribbean and is a United States common wealth. It is situated just East of the Dominican Republic/Haiti and to the West of the Virgin Islands where the string of islands begins to descend into a southern leg. In fact, it is so close, it is possible to take a ferry from Puerto Rico to the Dominican Republic.
Although Puerto Rico is a United States commonwealth, it has its own distinct culture. Citizens speak Spanish as their first language. However, English is very common throughout the island and taught in all schools.
Many people, including Americans, are very confused about where Puerto Rico is or its assocation with the United States. Some have even confused it as being in South America.
