If you happened to be cruising the 100 Highway in Cabo Rojo on Tuesday, you might have encountered some rock stars. Yes, Geology students, from the University of Michigan were swarming the roadside and closely observing a rocky embankment.
While my untrained geological eye certainly did not make much of all that rock and dirt, they were certainly very focused on the site... as though it were a meteor crash site. Let's assume we can extrapolate from this: they are either extremely focused on their careers in Geology, or secretly working for the CIA. Kidding... [nervous smile].
When questioned, they were a bit obscure about what they were analyzing. I jokingly offered that they might be searching each layer of the strata for evidence of historical "trash accumulation" and/or the fossilized bones of ancient Sato massacre sites. Seems like they might need some help from the anthropology department for that analysis.
Maybe they were searching for a place to bury the auto industry?
Fortunately, they did say they would have time left over for the beach (i.e. swimming/getting sun, not sand analysis) once their work was completed. Rock stars, if you are listening, I recommend Playa Succia here in Cabo Rojo (ignore the translation; trust me).

Miramar horses' slaughter: Animal cruelty among potential charges, police say
Owner found carcasses of horses apparently slaughtered for their meat.
The area of Long Beach and Riverside takes the top prize for the most polluted zone in the U.S. -- an area of frightful traffic and heavy industrial emissions that has the bad luck of air inversions that hold the bad particles right where they hurt.
ere are some of the top "winners." These cities made an appearance on all of the major lists available to the general public.
Pittsburg, Pennsylvania makes the top five of all the lists reviewed. It received low marks for everything except chemical dumping or toxic waste.
Birmingham, Alabama is probably the top small dirty city in the country. It has very poor air quality due largely to industrial development.
Long Beach/Los Angeles, California made the very top of two of the lists but it faired a bit better in the others. Air pollutions and hazardous waste are the two main problems for this California city.
Atlanta, Georgia just made the lists. Industry was the leading factory for bringing it down.
Cleveland, Ohio fell just below Atlanta on all but one report. Once again it is the air quality that pulled this city to a winning position.
There is much that goes into determining the health of a city. You might want to review this and other lists before finalizing your next trip.

FYI - Identifying other places that have issues is not a solution to the problems in your own country.
You might want to check out:

I have a question for you, where are you from and where did you get educated?

Because you really need to know some history facts that might be of surprise for you!!! i will start by stating you should look into the way the blue collar bankers from up north are handling the "world situation". Cause what has happened to Puerto Rico as a matter of fact what is happening to the world is just a snowball transforming into an avalanche.
You want a solution. I'll give a head start. First of all you have to get in your mind that we are not a country. Puerto Rico is a colony disguised as a "commonwealth" by the United States of America. They are what people like Rockefeller has called it and invested in it -an experiment- medically and military wise.
In the statement that i made before i gave you facts. if you are talking about murders per 100,000 FYI Washington D.C has only a population of 500,000. So again do your math and like i said those type of statistics need to have the measurements they do the comparison according to the size of the place. if you start looking at other stats of P.R. you will find out the per square mile we have the most roads or highways than any other country or island. The main problem in P.R. is overpopulation and money.
You tried debating with another blog and video and once again your objectiveness fails again. You are basing your answers on opinion, media and what another people have to say. Or maybe you just have some kind of envy. From a psychological point of view the fact that you even have a blog against P.R. sends a signal of insecurity about your own sense of being. believe me when i say that you are not making a difference or opening the eyes of the people from P.R. honestly you are wasting your time. There are ways and measures to change P.R. and let me tell you this is not it. If you are from P.R. stop talking and wasting time in the internet and start making a change in the island, become a public speaker or start somewhere. If you are not from P.R. then i feel bad for you and hope that your arrogance and close minded view about reality fades away.
it is amazing how there is war in two places of the world going on three, there is genocide in countries of Africa, psycho-serial killers in the U.S., how 50% of the people of the world are just earning 1 to 2 dollars an hour by making the cloth you are wearing yet you focus your energy on a dot in the map of the world. you should apply the subjective opinion with which you debated with written by Mr Gil cause you are just critic who sits down and watches things happen. if its so easy move your lazy self and start making a change. Cause me I'm working on mine but i will pursue it with the real facts. The real root of the problem.

Some quick comments:
I'll be honest. I find your postings very incohesive, darting quickly tangent from any particular central theme.
Your responses are also very typical of the opposing view I get here. Rather than focus on a topic, you are more interested in how you can discredit me. You have your "blinders" on Madam.
Regarding solutions, I'm really not particularly interested in whether or not you want to call Puerto Rico a country, commonwealth, state, or Pinnochio state (i.e. not a really state / waiting for the Red, White, & Blue Fairy's magic)... or for how you wish me to classify it. However, I'm sure this lack of a true sense of identity and mash up of government authority does lead to social discord, and provides a contributory impact among other multi-variant factors.
Ok, I'll play along, let's say Puerto Rico's root cause of such a high murder rate is solely overpopulation and money. Does that mean it's an artificial murder rate, an imaginary death toll?
While I appreciate (from an entertainment standpoint) your layman attempt at psychoanalysis, I can tell you one thing: "I have YOUR attention". That's a fact.
Don't be so naive as to think thousands of visitors reading the positions taken here do not leave with info (i.e food for thought). Of course, they are free to interpret it as they like... agreeing, disagreeing, or taking any position they desire. The key point is that information is transmitted, when they visit and that is the start of a transition.
You might want to focus a little bit less on grade school math and dig into some communication theory.
No single individual can focus on everything, as you well know. I focus on this "bloody" dot on the map because I live here and I think it's disgraceful to see the level of abuse this country must endure.
People like you arrive here to comment from time to time. While I do not know you personally, your ideas thus far (i.e. first impressions) would make me think you are very symbolic of the ignorance of Puerto Rico that freezes all opportunities for forward movement towards future progress.
I, on the other hand, am attempting to keep an open dialog, and providing an alternative perspective for anyone searching for it.
Now - let me tell you what will happen next. You'll read my comments, particularly the last line. You'll be infuriated. So you'll spend several more hours reading my blog articles trying to find areas to pick apart. I expect you'll create several more comments, each side stepping the key topic, and focusing on how you can find ways to discredit my assertions. From my understanding of psychology, I expect that I own several more hours of your life right now, and I doubt very much that you can walk away without jumping back into the fray. Am I right, or you are actually so confident that you've made your point, you can now walk away comforted that this blog has no impact on its readers? I'll take Vegas odds against you being able to do that.
